A high electric bill almost always comes down to a short list of heavy hitters. Here they are ordered by how much they typically cost, so you can start where the money is instead of unplugging phone chargers and hoping.
The big drivers
- Heating and cooling — the largest load in most homes, and where a small efficiency gain pays off most.
- Water heating — running continuously and easy to overspend on if the tank is old or set too hot.
- The always-on appliances — an ageing refrigerator, or a second fridge in the garage, adds up quietly.
The middle tier
- Old, inefficient HVAC running longer to do the same job.
- A water heater set above 120°F, or with no insulation blanket.
- The clothes dryer — one of the most energy-hungry appliances per use.
- Standby (phantom) loads across many devices.
- Incandescent or halogen bulbs still in high-use fixtures.
The small stuff (worth fixing, but not first)
- Chargers and power bricks left plugged in.
- A dirty HVAC filter making the system work harder.

Desktop: 200W × 8h × 30 = 48 kWh = $8. Lighting: 100W × 5h × 30 = 15 kWh = $3. The hours and load counts are assumptions — substitute your own.
