Attic insulation is the least glamorous upgrade in a house and one of the few where the physics is genuinely on your side: heat rises, and the attic is where it leaves.

Check what you have first

You don't need a meter. Put your head into the attic and look across the floor. If the insulation is level with the joists or you can see their tops, you're at roughly 6–8 inches — under recommended depth in nearly every U.S. climate zone.

What R-value to aim for

DOE recommendations run roughly R-30 to R-60 for attics, with the higher end in colder northern zones and the lower end in the warm South. Check the DOE insulation guidance for your specific zone before buying material — the difference between zones is large enough to matter.

R-value isn't the whole story
R-value measures resistance to heat conducted through the material. It does nothing about air moving through gaps around light fixtures, hatches, and top plates. That's why air sealing comes first.

Thinking about the payback honestly

The saving depends on four things we can't know for you: your climate zone, your heating and cooling fuel, how much insulation is already there, and your local energy rate. Going from almost nothing to code level in a cold climate is a fundamentally different investment from topping up an already-decent attic in a mild one.

Where it gets more complicated

  • Knob-and-tube wiring, or any wiring you're unsure about, must be assessed by an electrician before burying it in insulation.
  • Existing moisture stains, mould, or a leaking roof need fixing first — insulation traps the problem rather than solving it.
  • Recessed lights that aren't IC-rated need clearance or replacement before insulation goes over them.
  • Cathedral ceilings and unvented attics follow different rules entirely.
When to call a professional
Attic work involves live wiring, unstable footing between joists, and potential asbestos or vermiculite in older homes. If you find vermiculite-looking insulation, stop and get it tested before disturbing anything.

What to do next

Measure your current depth, look up the recommended R-value for your climate zone, and price the gap. If the attic also has obvious air leaks, seal those in the same visit — the two jobs are far more effective together than either alone.

Can I add new insulation on top of old?

Usually yes. Un-faced batts or blown-in material can go over existing insulation. Avoid adding a second vapour barrier by laying faced batts face-down over old material.
