SEER2 is the number every air conditioning quote leads with, and the one most likely to be used to upsell you. It's a useful figure, but only in the context of how much you actually run the thing.

What SEER2 measures

It's a seasonal efficiency ratio: cooling delivered across a season divided by the electricity used to deliver it. Higher is better. The '2' marks the updated test procedure, which applies more realistic external static pressure to represent real duct systems. Because the test is harder, the same physical equipment carries a lower SEER2 number than its old SEER number — that isn't a downgrade.

How to decide what level to buy

The value of efficiency is proportional to running hours. Ask your installer how many cooling hours your climate typically demands, then compare the price step between efficiency tiers against the electricity that step would save over those hours.

The thing quotes rarely mention

Sizing beats rating
An oversized system cools the air quickly, shuts off before it has removed much humidity, and leaves the house cold and clammy while cycling hard. Ask whether a proper load calculation (Manual J or equivalent) was done — not a rule of thumb based on square footage.

Where the numbers change

  • Regional minimum efficiency standards differ across the U.S., so the baseline you're comparing against isn't the same everywhere.
  • Duct losses in an unconditioned attic can waste a large share of the cooling regardless of the unit's rating.
  • Utility rebates sometimes target specific efficiency tiers, which can shift the economics of one step more than the energy saving itself.
Refrigerant work is licensed work
Charging, recovering, or altering refrigerant lines requires certification in the U.S. Installation and commissioning of a central system is a job for a qualified HVAC contractor.

What to do next

Before comparing SEER2 numbers, ask each contractor for a load calculation and a comment on your duct condition. If two quotes differ on the rating but only one did a load calculation, you're not comparing like with like.
